Total sea surface temperature (SST) in a coupled GCM is diagnosed by separating the variability into signal variance and noise
variance. The signal and the noise is calculated from multi-decadal simulations from the COLA anomaly coupled GCM and the
interactive ensemble model by assuming both simulations have a similar signal variance. The interactive ensemble model is
a new coupling strategy that is designed to increase signal to noise ratio by using an ensemble of atmospheric realizations
coupled to a single ocean model. The procedure for separating the signal and the noise variability presented here does not
rely on any ad hoc temporal or spatial filter. Based on these simulations, we find that the signal versus the noise of SST
variability in the North Pacific is significantly different from that in the equatorial Pacific. The noise SST variability
explains the majority of the total variability in the North Pacific, whereas the signal dominates in the deep tropics. It
is also found that the spatial characteristics of the signal and the noise are also distinct in the North Pacific and equatorial

One-dimensional sodium dodecyl sulfate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (SDS-PAGE) and high resolution two-dimensional electrophoresis (2-DE) were applied to separate protein molecules in dissolved organic matter (DOM) from oceanic waters. Results were: (1) The 2-DE distinguished a total of 412 protein spots in 10 samples from five water columns over the Pacific, although fewer than 30 proteins were resolved as bands from the identical samples by SDS-PAGE. (2) Major and ubiquitous protein bands (34 and 39 kDa proteins) on the SDS-PAGE gel were resolved into horizontally spread arrays (trains) of spots on the 2-DE gels, indicating that these bands were a mixture of protein species that have the same molecular weight (MW) but different isoelectric points (pIs). (3) Proteins that exhibited such electrophoretic patterns on the 2-DE gels were glycosylated with variable linkages between the sugar and polypeptide chains. (4) N-terminal amino-acid sequencing demonstrated that individual spots within each train of spots had identical N-terminal amino-acid sequences.The N-terminal amino-acid sequences of the 39 and 34 kDa glycoprotein spots in samples collected at different sites were also identical. Protein isoforms with the same amino-acid sequence but different glycosylation profiles, termed glycoforms, were often observed on the 2-DE gel. Thirty-one and 24 spots on the 2-DE gels were glycoforms of two glycoproteins with MWs of 39 and 34 kDa, respectively; they were one protein species. The glycoforms of the 39 kDa protein were identified as a low molecular weight alkaline phosphatase (L-AP) of Pseudomonas aeruginosa PAO1 by a homology search through five amino-acid sequence databases. The present and earlier work indicates that all identified source organisms of dissolved proteins belong to the Pseudomonas group. We propose the hypothesis that proteins associated with membrane vesicles liberated from a minor member of the bacterioplankton assemblage, the marine Pseudomonas group, are one of the important sources of dissolved proteins in oceanic waters. This hypothesis may apply to the source pathway and survival not only of proteins and also to the universally occurring bacterial peptidoglycan and lipopolysaccharide components in DOM. 相似文献

海洋/大气资料同化的理论基础是用数值模式作为动力学强迫对观测信息进行提炼,或者说,从包含观测误差(噪声)的空间分布不均匀的实测资料中依据动力系统自身的演化规律(动力学方程或模式)来确定海洋/大气系统状态的最优估计。本文对主要的现代海洋/大气资料同化方法,包括最优插值(()ptimal Interpolation,简称()Ⅰ)、变分方法(3—Dimensional Variational和4—Dimensional Variational,分别简称3DVAR和4DVAR)和滤波方法(Filtering)的原理、算法设计和实际应用进行系统地回顾,并对这些资料同化方法的优缺点进行分析和讨论。在滤波框架下,所有的现代资料同化方法都被统一了:()Ⅰ和3DVAR是不随时间变化的滤波器,4DVAR和卡曼滤波是线性滤波器,即非线性滤波的退化情形;而集合滤波能构建非线性的滤波器,因为集合在某种程度上体现了系统的非高斯信息。一个非线性滤波器的主要优点是能计算和应用随时间变化的各阶误差统计距,如误差协方差矩阵。将非线性滤波器计算的随时间变化的误差协方差矩阵引入到()Ⅰ或4DVAR中,也许能实质性地改进这些传统方法。在实际应用中,方法的优劣可能取决于所选用的数值模式和可获得的计算资源,因此需针对不同的问题选取不同的资料同化方法。由于各种资料同化方法具有统一性,因此可建立测试系统来评价这些方法,从而对各种方法获得更深入的理解,改进现有的资料同化技术,并提高人们对海洋/大气环境的预测能力。 相似文献

用EOF分析方法对北太平洋及赤道太平洋地区1949~1979年31年海表面温度距平场进行分解,得到几个主要距平海温模态(EOF1~3),分析了EOF1~3的时空分布特征。得到海温距平场的EOF1和EOF2~3模态分别对E1—Nino事件和黑潮大弯曲有很显著的相关性,指出SST第三模态场对黑潮大弯曲的影响具有很好的持续性,持续时间为1~2年。最后讨论了相互的影响过程,为黑潮大弯曲和E1—Nino事件的预报的可能性提供了依据。 相似文献

A numerical study using a 3-D nonhydrostatic model has been applied to baroclinic processes generated by the K
1 tidal flow in and around the Kuril Straits. The result shows that large-amplitude unsteady lee waves are generated and cause
intense diapycnal mixing all along the Kuril Island Chain to levels of a maximum diapycnal diffusivity exceeding 103 cm2s−1. Significant water transformation by the vigorous mixing in shallow regions produces the distinct density and potential vorticity
(PV) fronts along the Island Chain. The pinched-off eddies that arise and move away from the fronts have the ability to transport
a large amount of mixed water (∼14 Sv) to the offshore regions, roughly half being directed to the North Pacific. These features
are consistent with recent satellite imagery and in-situ observations, suggesting that diapycnal mixing within the vicinity
of the Kuril Islands has a greater impact than was previously supposed on the Okhotsk Sea and the North Pacific. To examine
this influence of tidal processes at the Kurils on circulations in the neighboring two basins, another numerical experiment
was conducted using an ocean general circulation model with inclusion of tidal mixing along the islands, which gives a better
representation of the Okhotsk Sea Mode Water than in the case without the tidal mixing. This is mainly attributed to the added
effect of a significant upward salt flux into the surface layer due to tidal mixing in the Kuril Straits, which is subsequently
transported to the interior region of the Okhotsk Sea. With a saline flux into the surface layer, cooling in winter in the
northern part of the Okhotsk Sea can produce heavier water and thus enhance subduction, which is capable of reproducing a
realistic Okhotsk Sea Mode Water. The associated low PV flux from the Kuril Straits to the open North Pacific excites the
2nd baroclinic-mode Kelvin and Rossby waves in addition to the 1st mode. Interestingly, the meridional overturning in the
North Pacific is strengthened as a result of the dynamical adjustment caused by these waves, leading to a more realistic reproduction
of the North Pacific Intermediate Water (NPIW) than in the case without tidal mixing. Accordingly, the joint effect of tidally-induced
transport and transformation dominating in the Kuril Straits and subsequent eddy-transport is considered to play an important
role in the ventilation of both the Okhotsk Sea and the North Pacific Ocean.
